Yesterday in a makeup-less face with smudges of eyeliner, I kept thinking, “Gotta get through the lows to appreciate the highs”. It was a roller coaster of a day that started out far too early when I dropped a new bottle of perfume at 4am, dipping lower and lower, then up again when I found out my ideas may actually be worth something to someone other than myself, and then higher when my Frederick’s of Hollywood feature went live.

When I reached the top of my coaster, I realized that the lows were really just tiny smudges- those insignificant ones that you have to squint to even see. And better yet, you can remove them with a swipe and a belief in, well, yourself.

Following the vast brunch (post to follow on that), Kim, Carla, the other co-founder of Have to Have, and Marlien Rentmeester, Lucky’s West Coast editor, led me and a group of bloggers on a shopping safari along Abbott Kinney Boulevard in Venice. There, we stopped at Marlien’s favorite shops and photographed items that we have to have. We then tweeted out the photos to @HavetoHave using the hashtag, #LuckyFabb, so that our followers could see the formations of our Abbott Kinney-curated registries.

The photos were then compiled and posted on the Have to Have homepage, where people can agree that they too have to have that item. The first item I photographed is third in the list of photos. As soon as I saw the red floral Isabel Marant dress at the Heist boutique, I had visions of me wearing it for many years to come. In my tweet, I described the print as “romantically country”- as it’s the type of dress you want to wear when falling in love. If you love it as much as I do, feel free to click on the “Yes” button because then I’ll get your vote in the Have to Have contest.

Do you wonder if you could look as good as those models and perhaps take your moves public? Well, ponder you shall not. The app allows you to upload your photo, as well as a Facebook friend’s photo, and get down on the virtual dance floor.

While clothing is normally optional on the dance floor, you might as well start off with a look you feel confident enough in to show off  the Man Vogue. Inspired by the male dance style, I looked to the River Island men’s section to see which piece I’d wear as a mini dress on and off the dance floor.

Navy Stripe Sweatshirt- I’d roll up the sleeves for the Catch of the Day dance.

So get up and go dancing. You no longer have an excuse not to.

I don’t mind being called sassy pants, which is why I identify with these red Frederick’s of Hollywood jeans.

Case in point, last night, this exchange occurred:

Man at eyewear store: Are you from here?

Me: No.

Man: I could tell. You have some sass to you.

You betcha.

This red pair is one of my favorites.

While we were loving the denim, we were also admiring each other’s lash extensions, courtesy of Xtend-a-Lash.

Lor-E Phillips, celebrity stylist for the Black Eyed Peas, styled the models for the presentation. She was incredibly open and insightful and even answered a few questions, paraphrased below.

WS: What was your inspiration for the models’ looks?

LP: The inspiration was day to night looks. There’s also a younger look with a scarf. [See red denim look.]

WS: What’s your favorite pair from the collection?

LP: The red pair.

WS: In general, what’s your favorite style of jeans?

LP: Right now I’m into flares and heels.

WS: Between light or dark wash denim, which wash do you prefer?

LP: I prefer dark.

WS: What style of jeans would you recommend for me?

LP: You can pull off any style. [Lor-E even thought I was taller than I am, which I loved!]

WS: What piece from Frederick’s of Hollywood would you recommend for me?

LP: You’d look good in the color, spearmint.

After speaking with Lor-E, I went straight to the spearmint pieces, particularly the Hollywood Dream Corset.

The best part about the night was the overall acceptance of being sexy in any body type- as well as the red jeans that went home with me.

En route to Coachella and en route to Coahome. We pulled off to the side of the road in front of an ATV riding area, where I would have much rather gone cruising than gone posing. With the exception of when I get to pose like this-

Before my advertising career, I worked in television production- one of those behind-the-scenes types who loved being a part of it- no matter how big or small “it” was. A few months ago, I stepped in front of the camera and filmed a few scenes for the television show, House of Consignment, on VH1. And the good-looking sneakers, without the not-so-good squirming, aren’t always easy to find. Kind of like love. Or a lot like it. That’s why, when you find the one- sneaker or man- you keep them, or try to, before they fall apart. [Still referring to sneaker or man here.]

It is for the above that I’m happy to have received a pair of Tretorn Nylite sneakers, iconic in my mind and in their own right. Created in 1967, the Nylite is considered to be the first luxury sports shoe and a perennial favorite for its Swedish minimalism style. For the Nylite Project, 19 bloggers were sent a white pair and a Do-It-Yourself kit to see the results of our customizations. Here are photos of the sneakers, how they fit in with my varied style, and why I made them to be the ones. You know, the ones I want to keep.

My submission to The Nylite Project:

I wanted to keep the integrity of the pure Tretorn Nylite shoe while throwing it back to my adolescent days of marking every inch of that purity with something philosophically engaging. [Pretty contradictory, but we'll get there.] Growing up, I’d bold out my backpack and text book covers with all sorts of personal facts- BFFs and crushes plus, plus me. I had always left my canvas sneakers alone though, always trying to keep them white. Even though the dirt represented “living”, I wanted to live in the untainted. So here I was in present day, the untainted sneakers staring back at me with those markers at my fingertips. Creative dilemma? It probably would have been, but not now. No, now, I’ve done a lot of living since then- the kind you don’t need quotations around. And I’ve always lived by one truth that does require quotations- only because it’s from my favorite film, Rudy. “In this life, you don’t have to prove nothin’ to nobody but yourself.” And that’s what I marked my shoes with.

And then there’s the second notebook I’ve been sharing, the one that reigns in my journalism background. I have been writing for The Network’s Talent Community Site, which stretches my writing in a different direction. There, I advise rather than document. And there, I see a whole lot of great, for which I am proud to be a part of.

The Network is the focus of Remodeled, a television show that provides a peephole into the modeling world. The other month, the show wrapped its first season and will be back on The CW this summer. Here are photos from the wrap party in Hollywood.
